Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and Igene (Columbia, Md.) have agreed to form a jv to produce natural-source astaxanthin, a nutrient used to impart a red color to farmed fish. The jv, which will be called Naturxan LLC, will make astaxanthin using a process involving phaffia yeast fermentation. The process has been approved as a feed ingredient in the US, EU, Canada Japan and Chile. End-use markets for the jv will include producers of farm-raised fish such as salmon and trout.
